Neck pain is a common discomfort in Hong Kong, affecting 80% of the population at least once in their lifetime. The cervical spine, which stabilizes the neck and supports the head, is often the primary source of this pain.
Mechanical Neck Pain originates from the cervical spine and surrounding muscles and is frequently linked to spinal degeneration. Poor posture is the main cause, leading to inflammation in structures such as the spinal discs and facet joints.
Why do I have Mechanical neck pain?
Forward Head Posture: Office workers commonly develop this condition when working at computers for long periods. This posture pulls the head forward, putting strain on and weakening the muscles at the back of the neck.
Text Neck: Prolonged downward gazing at phones, tablets, or other devices can cause neck pain and lasting damage. Our chiropractors have observed "text neck" symptoms in increasingly younger patients (as young as 15 years old) through X-ray examinations.
Several other postures can trigger neck pain: cradling phones between the ear and shoulder, viewing screens positioned too high, and hunching over computers. Using pillows of incorrect height can lead to neck and head muscle imbalance, potentially causing structural deformity over time.
The pain may also result from incidents such as traffic accidents, often diagnosed as Whiplash Associated Disorder (WAD) [insert link].
