Dr. Nichol Tang, D.C.

I once doubted whether I could become a great chiropractor. To date, I still do! The path to becoming a great chiropractor is challenging and long—it's a journey that might span your entire lifetime. Nevertheless, the rewards are worth the effort.
The profession brings immense satisfaction from helping others, along with a deep sense of achievement. Let's explore the key characteristics that make an exceptional chiropractor. These traits aren't just beneficial—they're often considered integral to succeeding in this field.
Open-minded
The field of chiropractic is vast, encompassing various techniques, skills, and even business ownership. After graduating, our perspectives often change through different exposures, such as internships and shadowing other chiropractors. Sometimes, these experiences may even challenge our existing knowledge or beliefs.
Through research, critical thinking, and practice, we develop and mature our unique chiropractic approach. This growth can span many years or even a lifetime. The Spinalysis approach, developed by Dr. Wesley and myself, is already helping everyone who walks through our doors heal and improve each day.
Confident yet humble
In this context, confidence means self-belief, not outdoing peers or colleagues. It's about authentic self-assurance built through practical experiences and constant learning. When chiropractors display false confidence, they risk losing their equilibrium in both professional conduct and patient care.
Genuine confidence comes from extensive clinical experience and diligent mastery of the craft. This confidence enables chiropractors to make accurate diagnoses, develop effective treatment plans, and provide optimal patient care.
Emotionally Intelligent
Chiropractors interact with people daily. Emotional intelligence is crucial for being a great listener, an astute observer and showing empathy toward patients. This builds trust—a fundamental component of an effective doctor-patient relationship.
We must listen to patients' needs and communicate effectively about their care. Moreover, chiropractors empower people to take control of their spinal health and well-being. When helping patients modify lifestyle habits, finding common ground requires considerable emotional intelligence.
Compassion
Showing kindness and consideration strengthens the rapport between doctor and patient. In Hong Kong, genuine face-to-face interactions are becoming rare. Some patients need extra care and compassion to heal effectively—that's how powerful compassion can be.
Those lacking compassion may treat diseases or disorders, but not the patients themselves. A professor once reminded us repeatedly, "We do not treat the neck pain patient, but the patient with neck pain." It's worth reading that again.
Being Smart
Lastly, remember you don't need to excel in every subject or be highly competitive. Academic proficiency can help you make better clinical decisions, but it's not necessarily the most important attribute as a healer. The interaction with patients and providing care and compassion are as important as making the right decisions.
Summary
The human body is fascinating and complex, offering no absolutes. While textbook knowledge isn't always your ally, experience and the traits mentioned above certainly are. This list could go on, but these characteristics form the foundation of a great chiropractor. If you align with these traits, you're already a step ahead. Remember, it's a journey that requires commitment, passion, and lifelong learning, but the rewards of helping others and making a difference in their lives are immeasurable.
